COMPANY

Investment bank, founded in 1914 as Charles E. Merrill & Co.; became Merrill, Lynch & Co. when Edmund C. Lynch became a partner the following year. Absorbed Cassatt & Co. and merged with another brokerage, E.A. Pierce & Co., in 1939, becoming Merrill Lynch, Pierce & Cassatt. Acquired Fenner & Beane brokerage in 1941, becoming Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane. Alpheus Beane left the firm in 1958, replaced on the nameplate by longtime company manager Winthrop Smith. Incorporated in 1959 as Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith. In 1973, ownership was transferred to a newly formed holding company, Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. Undergoing financial difficulties due to the subprime mortgage crisis, in 2008 it agreed to be acquired by Bank of America.
