COMPANY

Semiconductor manufacturer, founded 1974 by former Intel employee Federico Faggin. It is most known for developing the Z80 CPU, but it makes many specialized chips used by OEMs. In 1980 the company was acquired by Exxon and in 1989 employees re-acquired it. Zilog was made public in 1991 and subsequently bought out in 1998 by private equity firm Texas Pacific Group. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000.
