Supermarket chain, founded 1939 by Joe Albertson in Boise, ID. The chain was acquired American Stores in 1998, and peaked in 1999 with about 2,500 stores in 37 states. Acquired in 2006 by Supervalu, which operates more than 550 Albertson's stores in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Another 650 Albertson's stores are operated by Cerberus Capital Management in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Cerberus licenses the Albertson's brand from Supervalu, but the companies have separate management, different ad campaigns and sales fliers, etc. Albertson's parent company, Cerberus Capital Management, acquired Safeway in 2015 for $9.2-billion.
