Founded 1833 by Presbyterian ministers John Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart, as Oberlin Collegiate Institute. In 1835 it opened admission to blacks, the first college in America to do so. In 1837 women were first admitted, again becoming the first college in America to do so. In 1850 it changed its name to Oberlin College.
