A character-driven dark comedy, with memorable performances from Robert Carlyle as the pugilist Begbie, and Ewen Bremner, who originated the role of Renton on stage but here is cast as the obseqious Spud. Written in Scots and thickly performed, with occasional subtitles in some of the more surreal scenes. Well known for its classic techno soundtrack, released in two discs, with selections from Underworld, Iggy Pop and Brian Eno.
