Based on sketches and routines originated by the fringe theater group Kentucky Fried Theatre, the Kentucky Fried Movie is low on budget but high on laughs, presenting an entertainingly tasteless string of parodies of advertising, exploitation cinema, television shows, movie trailers and kung-fu flicks with a firm visual guide in director John Landis and some unlikely guest performers, including George Lazenby, Donald Sutherland, Bill Bixby and Henry Gibson. The faint of heart and the easily offended should steer well clear, however, as the content can be pretty raunchy in places and not everyone will find jokes about dead children, transvestites, bestiality and voyeurism funny, but it remains a vibrant and anarchic slice of anarchic American film comedy. The brains behind the Kentucky Fried Movie went on to create the Airplane! series and the Naked Gun films.
