The Idiot (23-May-1951)
Original Title: Hakuchi Director: Akira Kurosawa Writers: Eijirô Hisaita; Akira Kurosawa From novel: The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky Keywords: Drama A man who narrowly escaped death from an American firing squad projects a childlike and disarming naiveté. He meets Taeko, a striking but tragic woman kept as a mistress since age fourteen, as another eligible woman grows interested in him. Dostoevsky's The Idiot transplanted to postwar Japan. Despite its present 166 minute length, prior to release over 100 minutes were removed and then irretrievably discarded, making the film difficult to follow at times. One of Kurosawa's most evocative works.
