Queens Logic (1-Feb-1991)
Director: Steve Rash Writers: Joseph W. Savino; Tony Spiridakis Keywords: Drama, New York
REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 10-May-2005) It is my favourite film, a nostalgic
portrait of an American generation, far much better than "The Big
Chill" or "Diner". A group of childhood friends resee each other after
many years for the wedding of Ray (Ken Olin) to Patty (Chloe Webb) which
may not happen because Ray dreams to become a painter in Italy rather
than marrying a hairdresser from Queens. Even his friends don't like
their lives: Eliot (John Malkovich) is a homosexual who wants to avoid gay
stereotypes, Al (Joe Mantegna) is a fishmonger in trouble with his
wife (Linda Fiorentino) and Dennis (Kevin Bacon) has tried to become a
famous musician in Hollywood without any kind of success. There are also
a lot of other roles (very original), like Grace (Jamie Lee Curtis), a
well-intentioned psycothic who teachs Mantegna to become an adult, or
like Monte (Tom Waits), a funny criminal addicted to alcohol, or
Jeremy (Terry Kinney), a snob homosexual belonging to an upper class, who
tries to make Eliot change his lifestyle, or Cecil (Todd Field), a stupid
guy who has become a successful actor thanks to money, or the unhappy
and lonely girl at the bachelor party who likes Ray's paintings. With
some unforgettable scenes who teach how to overcome the difficulties of
life (Joe Mantegna climbing Hellgate Bridge, Tony Spiridakis howling at
the moon with a healer, Linda Fiorentino and Chloe Webb telling a not
very sensitive palmist their problems), a marvelous photography of the
spaces around Hellgate, a dynamic soundtrack and an outstanding
cast, Queens Logic is the best film I have ever seen and I don't
understand why it's always underestimated. The title of this film in my
nation (Italy) is "Dreaming Manhattan" (Sognando Manhattan).
