REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 21-Jun-2005) It's been a long time, but I
remember this as a very interesting movie. Black and white and
obviously low budget, but with emotional truth, grittily realistic
dialogue, and some terrific acting, notably from Lola Albright, who
gives an outstanding performance as a sophisticated stripper who
develops a crush on a neighborhood youth. Evidently never made it to
video, let alone DVD, but I would love to get a copy. Definitely worth
looking at, and the book it was based on, of the same title, by Burton
Wohl, isn't bad either.
Review by anonymous (posted on 5-May-2006) This is an excellent
little-known work featuring an absolutely top-notch performance by Lola
Albright. Quite risque for its time and full of world-weary angst and
pathos. I have been trying to obtain a copy for my collection for some
years but if a video/DVD ever existed it appears to be out of print.
Lola Albright apparently had a subsequent successful TV career, I
believe in the "Peter Gunn" series (which I've never seen) I have
wondered whether either she or her agent/employers may have discreetly
suppressed this film because of its sleazy connotations: they shouldn't
worry if this is the case as her performance would be considered
Oscar-nominee stuff by today's standards.
Review by Damon (posted on 18-Jun-2005) This is a special movie, mainly because it is such a great snapshot of the time period (late 50's?) and has this wonderfully sleazy story in the tradition of Sunset Blvd or The Postman Always Rings Twice. It is a dirty little story about a stripper who moves into an apartment building managed by a single man and his only son. The stripper ends up seducing the teenage son, and this plot makes for some real electricity! Mix that in with a great scene where the son sneaks into the burlesque show to see the stripper, and we're off and running!
Speaks to the "morals" of the time period. You will find yourself being very voyeuristic as you watch this sexy little story. Like great artists whose works are finally appreciated after their death, this film could be resurrected to be a great classic, but almost nobody knows this film!
If you see it, tell me your thoughts.
Do you know something we don't?
