REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 4-Nov-2006) I approached this film with trepidation. My partner had set the video (which meant that there was only a 50/50 chance of having the whole film anyway) and there was a much greater chance that it would be a stereotypical 'chick flick'. I am delighted to say that I was wrong to worry. This is an excellent dramatic comedy, looking at complex questions of identity as related to culture and faith, intergenerational relations, family expectation, racial and religious stereotypes and being human in the middle of it all. But if I have made it sound more like a collaboration between Chomsky and Kierkegaard, I didn't mean to, because its' actually very funny. There is good ensemble acting but above the others stands Summer Phoenix, who I had never seen act before but who, for me, made the film, with a performance which was natural and light, to the extent that I was amazed to find that she was not a Jewish woman from North London. A joy of a film, best enjoyed with a nice glass of Chardonnay and a few smoked salmon nibbles!
