ABSTRACT Davus is a slave to noted philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, eager to earn his freedom in the unjust confines of Roman Egypt. Christianity's arrival some time later produces marked instability in the region; Davus turns to the religion as a path to winning his freedom, struggling with religion and a growing attraction to his master as Hypatia fights a personal battle of her own against a changing of the guard.
