True story of a secret Nazi counterfeiting operation engaged in during the last years of World War II. Based on the life of Russian forger Salomon Smolianoff, chronicling his arrest and imprisonment in a labor camp where the plan takes place. Inmates are made to counterfeit the pound, and then the dollar, on a massive scale, with an eye toward disrupting global currency markets while keeping the cash-strapped Nazi government afloat.

Won the 2008 Oscar for best foreign language film.
