This is a very compelling story of love and loss. The main character, a black soldier in Europe, finds himself having an affair with a English woman, who has lost faith in her marriage and in her own happiness. The two fall in love with each other, but the mood quickly sours, as the woman's husband returns from the field, only to catch them in the act. Despite cries that it was consentual, the protagonist is thrown in jail for rape. Because he is black, his trial and sentencing are carried ot in an expedient manner. The woman tries to fight for his life, but is faced with a society that is less than forgiving, and a husband who is very manipulative. In the end, the soldier is hung for the crime of rape, and his love and the affair die with him.
