ABSTRACT
The Space Shuttle explodes upon re-entry while attempting to return to Earth, spreading an alien virus capable of altering human DNA in its fragments. Humans affected by the strange extraterrestrial epidemic appear to become virtual drones incapable of displaying emotion, bringing Washington, D.C.-based psychiatrist Carol Bennell into the fray to investigate when she learns of her husband's infection; a revelation that son Ollie, who contracted chickenpox as a small child, is immune to the disease compels Carol to protect him as she grows aware of his role as a possible savior of humanity.
