REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 6-Jan-2007) Starring Alan Bates (with questionable powers as strange as the character he plays), John Hurt (as a struggling musician) and Susannah York (as Hurt's wife), 'The Shout' is an enigmatic and ultimately unsatisfying film. Bates, an ex-psychiatric patient (with Tim Curry in a minor role as Bates' psychiatrist), allegedly has powers over (amongst others) the elements and people, claiming that their souls are contained in pieces of rock. He also claims to possess the 'terror shout' - a shout that can kill anyone Bates directs it at. Bates gains power over York, moves into their house and leaves Hurt humiliated and impotent against Bates' powers. Driven by jealousy and recalling Bates' belief in souls being contained in pieces of rock, Hurt finds Bates' rock, breaks it and destroys Bates. Not quite the supernatural film it tries to be, it leaves too many questions unanswered and - because of this - leaves a 'cold' feeling.
