REVIEWS Review by Brian Barnes (posted on 2-Mar-2005) The three stars is for one thing and one thing only. The magnificent voice of Mario Lanza. The movie industry at that time had the mistaken impression that Joe Pasternak could actually produce movies. Lanza himself called the picture 'trash' and fought MGM to keep from making it. Unfortunately Dore Schary, who took over MGM from L.B. Mayer and who is more than responsible for the demise of the great movie empire, forced the picture on Lanza anyway.
The story line is weak and typical... boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy sings and thumbs his nose at the army, boy gets girl and the two end the show by singing.
This movie is typical of how Hollywood used and abused the talent that it controlled. Lanza still shines despite weak dialogue and shoddy directing. The music, his voice, and James Whitmore literally carry the show and make it somewhat watchable.
