ABSTRACT Troubled nineteen-year old Malik El Djebena, an illiterate Arab with no support system, begins a six-year sentence at Brecourt, a French prison divided between Corsicans with ties to organized crime and Muslims. Initially hoping to keep his head down until he earns back his freedom, Malik is instead cornered into participating in the criminal activities of Corsican mob boss Cesar Luciani, carrying out "missions" and rising through the ranks to become a fearsome force to be reckoned with while attracting the animosity of other Corsican and Muslim inmates.
