ABSTRACT
Bernard Berkman, a high-strung college professor wont to look down on those he disagrees with as "philistines" worthy of his contempt, divorces easygoing wife Joan when she experiences success as a writer, leaving sons Frank and Walt hanging in the balance. The Squid and the Whale follows Frank and Walt, profoundly troubled in their own weird ways, as they struggle to cope with their parents' split in mid-1980s Brooklyn.
