Director: Roland Emmerich Writer: John Orloff Music by: Thomas Wander; Harald Kloser Producers: Roland Emmerich; Larry Franco; Robert Leger Keywords: Drama, Literature Political thriller presents a fictionalized account of the life of an Earl of Oxford and his possible role in the creation of all or some of William Shakespeare's works.
ABSTRACT Presented as a silver-screen endorsement of an academic school of thought concerning the authorship of William Shakespeare's works known as the "Oxfordian Theory", Anonymous provides viewers with a fictionalized account of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, attempting to use an apocryphal story concerning his interactions with the Queen of England to explain how he could have been responsible for works attributed to Shakespeare. Opened to mixed reviews, mainstream critics tended to view the film's shaky historical foundation as a negative counterweight to its impressive visuals. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
