ABSTRACT Polish immigrant Ewa Cybulski, a young woman sailing to New York City in search of a better life alongside sister Magda, is released onto the troubled streets of Manhattan on her own when her sibling is quarantined at Ellis Island due to illness. Distraught, confused, and vulnerable, poor Ewa is exploited by charismatic sociopath Bruno and coerced into prostitution, looking to Bruno's magician cousin Orlando as a potential lifeline out of her dire predicament as she sinks deeper and deeper into the depths of New York City's underworld.
