The Governess (11-Jun-1998)
Director: Sandra Goldbacher Writer: Sandra Goldbacher Keywords: Romantic Drama
REVIEWS Review by philip lambert (posted on 10-Sep-2008) This film highlights the classic sultriness of another era, with the camera obscura acting as both voyeur and admirer of asertive femininity as seen through the lens of stultified goyisch Victorian society.
Minnie Driver,as "Mary Church",gives us, in her role,a unique insight into the constructs of English society that is both fascinated and repelled by another culture within its walls..
The haunting and erotic soundtrack takes the viewer into the darkness and light of the alleyways of London and the light of the countryside, the contrast representing grief and loss against a new beginning, the certainty of the image on chymical sepia, and "fixation" on the loved object.
This film stays in the memory as the treasured family photographs in their box, as if from the revered coffin of her murdered father she meets with the resurrection of her love for him in her trysts with her secretive, closed, then liberated emloyer.
A pastiche of metaphors and captured emotions makes this an absorbing journey into the viewers own soul.
