REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 12-Aug-2006) This one will really keep your heart
beating. It's relentless. Starting off as an innocent and innocuous
light romantic comedy, De Jarnatt turns to the dark side when his main
protagonist, Harry, accidently intercepts a telephone call that
portends global disaster. What happens after that is presented in near
real time and is some of the most creative film making I've seen. How
would people act under such conditions? No matter how you think, you'd
probably be wrong. De Jarnatt's cast of characters act in the most
bizarre ways, often completely opposite to their best interest. If the
subject matter wasn't so damned serious one might be tempted to chuckle
out loud. Ever distracted from their attempt to reach safety, De
Jarnatt's progagonists encounter a mind-boggling collection of
cartoonish characters and situations building to an unforgettable
climax. The film is very much in the spirit of Hitchcock's "North by
Northwest" except amazingly the action doesn't stray further than the
few blocks in the near west Los Angeles neighborhood, the Miracle Mile.
Not faultless, but this is one little gem of a movie.
Review by Orion Bennett (posted on 27-Feb-2005) I watched this film, on late night television... (It took two viewings to be able to watch it... first time broke into the middle... which captured my interest enough to want to see the begining.)
The concept was interesting... kind of similar to a pyschological evaluation, to see what happens to people in a small crowd when they hear of a coming disaster, (which is unverified), and what they do with that information.
When Anthony Edwards gets the phone call, warning of disaster... and in the cafe pieces the story to possible facts... the tension builds... and then it basically turns into a disaster movie, as he tries to find the love of his life, Mare Winningham to wisk her away to safety. (Where is safety when there is threat of nuclear war?)
I was rather impressed with the turns and twists, wishing that the film would have lasted a little longer... to see the end. (But I wish that of most films).
If you like thriller films, with the potential plus of understanding how people might react, with just the threat of disaster... and are not looking for Oscar worthy drama, this film may likely be for you.
Do you know something we don't?
