Scared Straight (1978)
Director: Arnold Shapiro Writer: Arnold Shapiro Keywords: Documentary A group of wayward youths, all of whom have committed serious crimes such as arson, assault, and armed robbery, are taken to Rahway State Prison, where they spend a day with a group of hardened criminals, all serving life sentences. The criminals do their best to explain to the youths in no uncertain terms just how horrible life in prison will be for them. A follow-up show, Scared Straight: 20 Years Later, found that 16 out of the 17 youths reformed and managed to stay out of prison. The film was broadcast uncensored on television, the first instance in which profanity on television was intentionally not bleeped. Peter Falk narrates.
