A young woman's aunt, an opera singer, is victim of an unsolved murder. Years later, at the suggestion of her new husband, the couple moves into the aunt's old house. After a short time, small things start happening to her -- a misplaced item, forgetfulness, strange noises, unexplained dimming of the gaslights -- in a campaign designed to bring her to insanity. Director George Cukor ventures from his familiar territory into Hitchcockian suspense. Remake of Gaslight (1940), which in the months prior to the release of this film, MGM destroyed as many copies as it could get its hands on.
