Officials in a small Slovakian town assign Tony Brtko the task of "Aryanizing" Mrs. Lautmann's button shop, the forcible transition from Jewish ownership. Expecting wealth, he discovers the shop is not actually successful, but instead Mrs. Lautmann is a confused and deaf widow supported out of kindness by the Jewish community. He develops a friendship with the lady; when Jews are expelled from the town, Brtko tries to protect her from harm. Received an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; additional nominated for Best Actress. Won Special Mention at Cannes.
