Serenade (23-Mar-1956)
Director: Anthony Mann Writers: Ivan Goff; Ben Roberts; John Twist From novel: Serenade by James M. Cain Producer: Henry Blanke Keywords: Drama Damon, a vineyard worker with a golden operatic singing voice is discovered by a wealthy arts patron Kendall Hale, who shepherds his career for a time and then abruptly discards him for another boy. The abandonment ruins his debut at the Metropolitan Opera and he leaves opera dejectedly, whereupon he meets a beautiful Mexican actress who restores his mental condition and becomes his bride. Later, Kendall makes a decision to re-enter Damon's life. Adaptation of Cain's novel with the homosexual element removed. Lanza is overweight and possesses mediocre acting talent but his singing voice here commands well; worth viewing for the music alone.
