Angels in America (7-Dec-2003)
Director: Mike Nichols Writer: Tony Kushner From a play by: Tony Kushner Keywords: Drama Television adaptation of the Tony Kushner play of the same name follows the lives of a number of New Yorkers during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
ABSTRACT AIDS ravages America's gay community in the mid-1980s amidst a moral panic produced by uncertainty over the illness and the paranoia of a Moral Majority-dominated federal government. Angels in America follows Manhattan as it is affected by the crisis; openly gay Prior Walter is left by lover Louis after disclosing his diagnosis, while self-hating anti-gay political figures Joe Pitt and Roy Cohn remain in the closet out of fear for their livelihoods. Prior has a traumatic religious experience involving angels as Joe and Roy sink deeper into their lie-infested lives. Widely considered one of the greatest made-for-cable features of all time, Angels in America -- broadcast as a six-part HBO miniseries -- won eleven Emmys and five Golden Globes.
