ABSTRACT First sequel to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Picking up from where The Fellowship of the Ring's plot left off, The Two Towers portrays a Middle-earth mired in heavy conflict. Gandalf sacrifices himself at Balrog to allow the Fellowship to escape from the Mines of Moria; meanwhile, Frodo and Sam press on in their quest for the One Ring, aided by the troublesome Gollum. Sauron's troops advance towards Gondor to top off a veritable pile of turmoil, setting the stage for the calamitous War of the Ring. Won Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects; nominated for Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
