The mystique of Cross Creek first came to my attention in the 1983 film by the same title, staring Mary Steenburgen, Rip Torn, Peter Coyote and Dana Hill. I fell in love with the movie and review it at lease once a year. Living in Citrus County, Florida, I am only a short drive from the now historical home of Marjorie Kinnon Rawlings. While the movie is not absolutely acurate in its historic details, it is an authentic portrayal of old Florida and the characters who homesteaded that beautiful area between Orange and Lochloosa Lakes called Cross Creek. Producer Robert Radnitz and director Martin Ritt have given us a lavish encounter with old Florida's early rural beginnings, marshlands and waterways, and natural beauty. The movie is filled with romance and adventure, human kindness and frontier justice. It is a must see for all who relish the human experience.
