An American ex-sheriff's wife is killed near the Mexican border, touching off a conflict with illegal immigrants.

ABSTRACT
Olivia, wife to xenophobic Arizonan ex-sheriff Roy, is accidentally killed by white teenagers firing "warning shots" when she rides her horse past illegal Mexican immigrants Miguel and Jose; Roy ultimately finds Miguel holding her horse's reins in an apparent murder. An investigation ensues, one that seems poised to break through Roy's rigid prejudices just as Miguel's wife Paulina encounters trouble of her own while attempting to rescue him from his situation.
