Hail the Conquering Hero (9-Aug-1944)
Director: Preston Sturges Writer: Preston Sturges Music Score: Werner Heymann Keywords: Comedy Ineligible for the Marines due to his 4-F classification, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith's very name conjures up expectations of military service and dedication. For the benefit of his mother, Woodrow weaves from whole cloth a story of honorable discharge after injury in battle; Marines he meets like him and decide to back up his story. The rues works all too well: his hometown erects a statue and there is talk of running for political office. Sturges received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
