REVIEWS Review by James Richardson (posted on 24-Mar-2005) This was Matthew Bright's first outing as a director. He immediately drags us deep into a world of darkness.
He mixes Brothers Grimm fairy tales with the modern world.
In this story of revenge a troubled teen called Vanessa (Reese Witherspoon) is going to be taken into care after her mother and stepfather are arrested. Instead she handcuffs her social worker to the leg of her bed and sets out on a journey across country to Utah where her grandmother lives. Kissing her boyfriend goodbye, he passes her his gun.
But in her way is the I 10 Killer (Kiefer Sutherland). A brutal serial rapist who poses as a psychologist, developing a sense of trust with the ill fated teens.
Along Vannesa's travels she unknowingly takes the stretch of highway where the killer hunts. Her car breaks down, but someone pulls over to help. He offers a lift as her car cannot be fixed. Vannesa agrees. He says his name is Bob. She tells him of her past. he begins making her relive her child abuse.
Then Bob pulls a knife and is intent on raping her but Vannesa has the gun and turns the tables quickly in her favour. Shooting Bob multiple times in the head and back. She thinks its over. But Bob is not dead and is hell bent on revenge.
Vannesa is arrested and sent to prison. Escaping with a friend she makes it to Utah where she finds her grandmother's house. In bed she finds her "grandmother" who reveals himself as Bob the I 10 killer. After a struggle Vannesa comes out on top. But we are left to ponder over our heroin's future.
An excellent yarn with many shocks along the way. Matthew Bright is a brilliant director with a dark sense of humour that shines through in his films.
