After Earth (1-May-2013)
Director: M. Night Shyamalan Writers: M. Night Shyamalan; Will Smith; Gary Whitta Keywords: Sci-Fi In a future where humanity has been forced to vacate its home planet, young solder Kitai Raige is forced to control his own destiny after an earthbound emergency crash-landing of a spaceship piloted by his father leaves the elder critically wounded.
ABSTRACT Will Smith and son Jaden star in this transparent vehicle about Cypher and Kitai Raige, a father-son duo of soldiers in a futuristic universe where the Earth has been 'quarantined' in the wake of an environmental catastrophe that forces humanity as we know it to progress beyond the reaches of its atmosphere. Sent on an interplanetary mission with his father, Kitai must rely on his own wits and abilities whilst braving the harsh and inhospitable climes of an unknown realm when their spaceship malfunctions and is forced to make a crash-landing on Earth that leaves Cypher gravely injured. Critics largely panned After Earth's plot and imagery as nothing more than a goosed-up piece of low-hanging Hollywood cheese upon its release, with some going so far as to draw parallels between its story and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics.
