ABSTRACT Richard O'Barry, dolphin trainer responsible for capturing and training dolphins featured in 1960s television series Flipper, became an advocate for the plight of dolphins held in captivity after one such Flipper-playing dolphin committed stress-induced suicide in his arms. Four decades later, O'Barry and a crew comprised of fellow activists, researchers, and filmmaker Louie Psihoyos embark on a journey to infiltrate a notorious cove near Taiji, Japan, evading hostile local authorities and guards bent on protecting the disturbing secret that is the Asian nation's black-market industry of dolphin beat and sales of captive dolphins to aquariums and amusement parks. Won an Academy Award for Best Documentary.
