ABSTRACT Curvy diva Effie White, easy-on-the-eyes Deena Jones, and Lorell Robinson form a trio of young 1960s-era African-American soul singers called The Dreamettes, receiving an unexpected big break when ambitious car salesman Curtis Taylor, Jr. enters the music industry and arranges them a gig backing up R&B sensation James "Thunder" Early. Seeing dollar signs when Early's star begins to fade, Curtis transforms The Dreamettes into the headlining Dreams, creating interpersonal tension in a cutthroat business as he promotes Deena's looks over Effie's larger-than-life persona.
