ABSTRACT Mary Dinkle, an eight-year old outcast in a broken mid-1970s Australian home, writes to a random name in a Manhattan phone book one day as part of a desperate attempt to make a friend in the world. The lucky recipient: Max Horowitz, a morbidly obese forty-year old New Yorker beholden to crippling bouts of social anxiety. Child and man embark on an unlikely friendship spanning multiple decades, seeing the pair through various significant episodes in their respective lives as they grow and change as individuals in their own corners of the world.
