Three ruthless fugitives from a Christmas bank robbery flee the town of New Jerusalem, tracked by a posse; in the desert, they encounter a dying mother and her infant. Two convince the third to rescue the baby. A tough, darker western which has aged well. Remade by John Ford in Technicolor as 3 Godfathers (1948), with considerably more sentimentality.
