Heavy Metal (29-Jul-1981)
Director: Gerald Potterton Writers: Len Blum; Richard Corben; Dan Goldberg; Angus McKie; Dan O'Bannon; Bernie Wrightson Music by: Elmer Bernstein Producer: Ivan Reitman Keywords: Musical, Sci-Fi, Action/Adventure, Rock and Roll, Anthology Anthology of five animated stories, their common thread a glowing green orb, "Locnar." Much coveted, Locnar will give its possessor much more than he or she bargained for. Based on a classic adult fantasy/sci-fi magazine, with a healthy dose of eroticism and nudity. Exceptionally good soundtrack. The ultimate fare for the stoner with discriminating tastes.

REVIEWS Review by Crazy Quagga (posted on 10-Feb-2005) Heavy Metal is one of the classic underground cult films, and one of the most popular in Columbia/TriStar's video collection. Heavy Metal is a grown-up version of Saturday morning-style cartoons-- complete with gratuitous nudity and drug content. The movie (based on the comic book series of the same name) centers around the Loc-Nor, a green-glowing ball of pure evil that tells of its spread of misery. Each story is told as a segment, and each segment has a different animation style and content. Although obstesibly "sci-fi", the movie successfully blends humor, drama, and fantasy in an entertaining way.
The plot is a bit incoherent in places, juvenile in others, and always a bit over the top. This may be why many consider it to be a "stoner" film, a reputation which it probably does deserve.
Although somewhat "primitive" by today's standards of CGI animation, the campy concept, style, and classic rock soundtrack give Heavy Metal a great deal of charm. However, the recent sequal, Heavy Metal 2000, is considerably less inspired.
