Original Title: El Espinazo del diablo Director: Guillermo del Toro Writers: Guillermo del Toro; David Muņoz; Antonio Trashorras Keywords: Horror, Ghost A young boy sent to an orphanage following his father's death in the Spanish Civil War investigates a lurking horror plaguing his new home.
ABSTRACT The tumultuous Spanish Civil War hits close to home for ten-year old Carlos in 1939, as he is sent to live in a remote orphanage when his leftist father is killed during conflict with Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces. The orphanage's kindly faculty does little to assuage young Carlos' concerns about his new surroundings, especially after a nasty encounter with hateful caretaker Jacinto; over time, he uncovers a past murder of former student Santi and their ghost's haunting of the grounds, using his acquired knowledge to investigate the orphanage's tortured history to the best of his abilities.
