Roy Earle is released from his life prison sentence after a pardon by the Governor, is hired by gangster Big Mac to lead the heist a Palm Springs resort. But his crew is inexperienced and things go badly. The sympathetic Earle is one of Bogart's finest roles, catapulting him to the top of the marquee for subsequent films. Remade by Walsh as Colorado Territory (1949).
