In post-WWII Rome, economics are tough. The father of a small boy lands a job putting up movie posters, requiring the use of a bicycle; the family pawns their linens to obtain the bicycle which is stolen on his very first day of work. Finding the police unhelpful, father and son desperately scour the city looking for the stolen bicycle. Neo-realist film shot with non-professional actors. Received an honorary Oscar for Most Outstanding Foreign Language Film, and a nomination for Best Screenplay.
