ABSTRACT Aristocratic Venice merchant Bassanio's profligate lifestyle leaves him in financial ruin, forced to seek out a loan to save himself and win the heart or ravishing socialite Portia. Bassanio is refused help by confidant Antonio, his money invested in a sailing expedition; desperate, he resorts to reviled Jewish money-changer Shylock for assistance, agreeing to a strange interest-free loan requiring the sacrifice of "a pound of flesh" if he fails to pay it back in full in three months' time. Bassanio is eventually faced with the prospect of paying his gruesome debt to Shylock just as Antonio's nautical endeavor goes south, forcing Portia's hand to save the day.
