Two Came Back (28-Sep-1997)
Director: Dick Lowry Writer: Raymond Hartung (screenplay) From novel: Albatross by Deborah Scaling-Kiley and Meg Noonan Keywords: Thriller
REVIEWS Review by Ski Monkey (posted on 8-Aug-2005) Thoroughly disappointing survival drama about a large sailboat lost at sea in a Pacific storm. Juvenile dialog, one-dimensional character development, and disturbing lapses in realism. Drew laughs due to sophomoric dialog.
Highlights from my perspective:
One character is thrown overboard in a fight on-board during a raging storm with the sails fully set. After 60 seconds of yelling, the lost crewman pops up within throwing distance of the leeward rail. If the sailboat was fully powered and making 8-10 knots, the crewman would quickly be swept behind and would require maneuvering to get back to him.
In another instance, the captain is unable to report the coordinates of the ship to the Coast Guard due to a missing chart, despite the fact that the ship is loaded with modern electronics it lacks a simple GPS? Unbelievable.
Once the ship sinks, the crew is trying to flip over their only "lifeboat", a zodiac raft. They flip it over in the 70mph wind where it is naturally taken by the wind and flown away. "Fortunately" the crew is able to catch it after 3-4 minutes of swimming. Anyone who has tried to swim after a boat blown by a heavy gale would certainly find this amusing.
The actors do a good job and can't be faulted, and the camera work was impressive, but the screenplay was horrible.
