ABSTRACT British journalist Martin Sixsmith, burned by his loss of employment as an adviser for the Labour government, finds himself thrust into a period of existential soul-searching when he is left without a clear path going forward in his life. When he meets a daughter of a woman named Philomena Lee at a party and learns of her life story, however, he runs with the very kind of human interest piece he would normally avoid, setting out to investigate the tantalizing tale of a woman's son gone missing following a forced residency at a convent and uncovering a bevy of secrets in the process. Nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
