REVIEWS Review by Solstice (posted on 30-Aug-2005) No Regrets is a delightful discovery: an intelligent, thoughtful movie for grown-ups. (Something Hollywood seems to have forgotten how to make.) This independent film tells the story of a man (Robert Merrill) who can't help wondering how his life would have turned out if he'd married his college sweetheart (Lari White) as planned. The trouble is, it's 18 years later and he still can't forget her, even though he hasn't seen her in all that time. Not to mention the fact that he's married and has two daughters. When he actually dares to look up his old flame, events spin quickly out of control and before you know it he's managed to reunite his wife (Janine Turner in her best role since Northern Exposure) with her college sweetheart (Brad Johnson).
If that sounds like more than enough spice to make a good stew, wait... there's more. It turns out that these four are actually actors making a film and the writer-director (Edward Albert) is examining his own life by making a movie about it! He's the one who can't forget his college sweetheart (Kate Jackson), even though he's happily married (to Jennifer Hetrick). If it sounds confusing, it's not. The transitions between the film and the film-within-the-film are artfully done, and the multiple layers give the film a richness that make you want to watch it again. In the end, it's a love story that's anything but predictable. Kate Jackson has likened it to her favorite movie of all time, Casablanca. That's a lot to live up to, but No Regretsultimately carves its own completely original place. And it's a place well worth visiting.
P.S. The soundtrack is awesome -- Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark, Ben E. King's Stand by Me, The Everly Brothers' Bye, Bye Love and many more -- the music is as important to No Regrets as The Big Chill's was.
