REVIEWS

Review by anonymous (posted on 27-Sep-2006)

In my humble opinion, this is Sayles' best work to date. The script (for which he received an Academy award nomination [and should have won...]) is incredibly layered and coherent at the same time - brilliant (a word I seldom use). The story simultaneously spans generational, ethnic, and class lines in small town American life in an understated and accurate way. If that wasn't enough, it's also a great "cold case" detective yarn and a voyage of self-discovery for the lead character (played by the absolutely wonderful Chris Cooper - truely "an actor's actor"). The numerous sub-plots are a delight. They are like varying themes skillfully blending into a masterful orchestral work. All the actors involved are entirely believeable in their words, actions (and reactions), and gestures. The generous use of gentle humour was another delight for me. So real and incredibly human. This film is an (overlooked?) classic. I love it.
