REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 4-Jul-2005) The premise is hardly new: a woman
chases a serial killer who's just murdered her best friend, the
friend's family and the two employees of a gas station/convenience
store. While the killer seems so over the top he's a little hard to
believe (how come he hasn't been caught before, if he murders whole
groups of people at a time?), the spirited performances rescue the film
almost as much as Molly Parker's character rescues the teen-aged
hostage the killer has trapped in a special made-for-victims room in
his house. Parker is always believeable, no matter how far-fetched the
role and she holds the film together, despite The so-so writing, which
wastes Piper Laurie on a tiny part as a passer-by who tries to help and
gets killed for her trouble. Perhaps the writer didn't want Laurie to
compete too much with the heroine (Parker) for screen time. The first
half is a chase movie, with Parker alternately persuing and hiding from
the killer, while the second half is a cat-and-mouse battle of wits at
the killer's house, with Parker (on her own despite the efforts of a
well-meaning sheriff) having to not only dodge the killer but save the
little girl he's been hiding. The whole thing has a sort of morbid
fascination to it, as I had to see how Parker managed to triumph at the
end. John C. (McGinley?) - appropriately frantic, crazed, scary and
even occassionally funny - gives a high-octane performance worthy of
the part.
