Lafayette Escadrille (1958)
Director: William A. Wellman Writers: A. S. Fleischman; William A. Wellman Music by: Leonard Rosenman Keywords: Drama, WWI Tab Hunter plays a juvenile delinquent who fled as a fugitive to join the Lafayette Escadrille (Squadron), a group of American flyers fighting for France in the early days of WWI. However very little time is spend on the Escadrille and far too much on the troubles Hunter makes for himself. Wellman's final picture.
It should be noted that William A. Wellman had flown with Escadrille SPA-87, not Lafayette Escadrille N-124, as Warner publicity material stated. Wellman's own narrative of his experience with the film changed over the years. But he was justifiably bitter regarding the changes he claimed Jack Warner made to his story: "That rotten bastard Jack Warner. He gave my Greek tragedy a Pollyanna ending, then had the balls to call it Lafayette Escadrille when it didn' have a fucking thing to do with the Lafayette Escadrille. I told the dumb bastard it was the Lafayette Flying Corps. All the guys that were still alive thought I was nuts. I told Warner if I ever caught him alone, which in his case was damn near impossible, I'd put him in the hospital." Quoted by Tab Hunter in Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, page 179.
