ABSTRACT Swiss national Raimund Gregorius, an aging professor of classical languages, crosses paths with a Portuguese woman when he saves her from jumping to her death. Following this chance encounter, Gregorius happens upon a book romanticizing a turbulent period of Portuguese history and grows infatuated with it, leading him on a journey that finds him abandoning his career and discarding his reserved attitudes to travel into the heart of his new favorite country.
