An upper middle class couple living well beyond their means both lose their jobs. At a bank robbery they are taken hostage, accidentally ending up with some of the take. This gives them the idea for a new revenue stream, commencing an unlikely crime spree. But it is never enough! Good chemistry between Segal and Fonda. Inferior remake a quarter-century later, Fun with Dick and Jane (2005).

REVIEWS

Review by anonymous (posted on 9-May-2005)

This film is a complete package. With its delicious opening credit sequence a pleasure in itself as it combines a totally appropriate and fun song (a rare thing)with tongue in cheek 'Dick and Jane' pages which set the scene for the film perfectly. The acting is all superb (even the dog) and the writing classic in its subtle humour. There is a smile in every second of this film and the opportunity for a solid belly laugh presents itself regularly throughout. There are no superfluous characters - every person counts and makes their contribution to the entire flawless creation. You may be able to tell that I like this film. I get bored very easily and this is one of the very few films that I will happily watch again and again, finding something new to savour every time. It is an intelligent, gentle classic film - an all time great with a subversive undertone to give an acid tang to what could have been syrupy sweetness in less skilled hands - here's hoping the 2005 version is even half as good as the original - but I doubt it.
